About

Former teacher, navy wife of ten years, mother of three. Mocha/shoe/purse addict.

We’ve lived in four different states in the past decade, collecting memories, kids, and pets in every state. I am a substitute teacher and love that I don’t have any homework.

On April 22, 2010, my husband was in a car accident while deployed in Iraq. Needless to say, this day has changed our lives.

I write about the accident and how we’re picking up the pieces, Navy life, adapting to the civilian world, silly things my kids say, delicious things I eat, beautiful shoes I buy.

In addition, I write about my attempts with crafting and all things DIY (“she’s crafty”; an homage to the Beastie Boys) and anecdotes about sub life (as in -stitute teaching not what my hubby’s worked in; “Adventures of a Sarcastic Sub”).

Some of you have asked how to get in touch with me. My email address is alma l thompson (no spaces) (at) yahoo dot com. No spam unless it is served with a fried egg over rice please!

May our bellies ache with laughter and too much expresso.

What an eye opening blog, Thank you!
I’m reading and learning so much about how military families live and how you cope with everything that’s happened since your husband’s accident.
On long slow recoveries I can definitely relate, I have muscle, tendon and ligament damage in my foot after a stupidly simple accident end Nov, 2010 and am still on crutches, doing intensive painful physio and trying to increase work hours.
There are good days and bad days. A good cry goes a long way sometimes because pent up frustration and pain only explodes at very inappropriate moments otherwise, or more likely, and worse… at people who are already going the extra mile for you.
The “One day at the time” maxium is being taken very literally by me right now and no doubt you too will know this only too well.
Your and your husband love each other and can be strong together, as a couple, as a family. You will probably learn more about yourselves than you ever wanted to know LOL but there will be a silver lining in there (somewhere, somehow).
Keep strong.. in Dutch we have our own expression for wishing someone “good luck” , it’s “Sterkte!” and it literally means “Strength!”
Writing about it is a brilliant start, no need to keep it secret, I need educating and enlightening on what you are going through too… you too are brave.
“Sterkte” as you journey though this…

Thank you for visiting! Your comment is a glaring reminder to update my blogroll too! Maybe I should pay my ten year old to do it. I’m sure he’d figure it out in less than an hour… :) Alma
